Some onion producers are forced to send their products for processing, as their quality is rapidly deteriorating. This observation is shared in the market review of the “Plantator” magazine by Ksenia Husieva, an expert in the fruit and vegetable market of Ukraine from “APK-Inform”.

“And the price for this product unfortunately cannot be raised, because there are still large volumes in stock, and the quality is very, very low,” she adds.
Husieva names this crop as the most problematic position in the market. Last year, too much of it was planted, and there was no normal price for it, explains the expert, it was a stagnation throughout the season. At the end of March – beginning of April, onions were sold for 7-13 UAH/kg, and even now producers are selling them from 8 to 14 UAH/kg.
Moreover, starting from mid-April, early imported onions will enter Ukraine, with Turkey and Egypt being the first to export, while Ukrainian winter production will only enter the market at the end of May, notes the analyst from “APK-Inform”.
“Therefore, if by that time domestic producers do not manage to sell last year’s onions, they will simply have to discard them,” concludes Husieva.
