Ukraine to lose significant foreign exchange earnings from sunflower oil exports disruptions

Ukraine’s losses in foreign exchange earnings in 2026 from disruptions in sunflower oil exports due to shelling by Russian occupiers could exceed $0.6 billion. This estimate was provided by the head of the investment and material-technical support department of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, Oleksandr Zakharchuk, reports UNIAN.

“The loss of foreign exchange earnings from sunflower oil exports from Ukraine in just 2026 may reach at least $600-650 million,” he believes.

This assumption was made by the researcher based on data indicating that the volume of Ukrainian sunflower oil exports in 2020 (before the full-scale invasion) was 6.1 million tons, and in the following year, it decreased to 4.6 million tons. In the first 10 months of 2025, Ukraine shipped only 3.5 million tons of the product.

“According to the forecast estimates of the researchers at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, in 2025/26 MY, sunflower oil exports will remain at the level of 3.2-3.5 million tons, even with a partial restoration of the grain corridor through the Bosporus, as port infrastructure capacities have been almost halved,” noted Oleksandr Zakharchuk.
