Protection in T1: control of overwintering and early spring infection

The resumption of winter crop vegetation is always accompanied by the spread of fungal infections. Even in frosty weather, as this winter has shown, the pathogens of powdery mildew, septoria, pyrenophora, brown rust, helminthosporiosis, cercosporellosis, fusarium, and snow mould remain viable — especially on plants already affected in autumn, volunteer crops, and plant debris under snow cover.

Diseases of Wheat and Barley in Autumn and After Vegetation Resumes

Very rarely, but still, there are farmers who do not consider T1 treatment a priority. They argue that the lower leaves will be the first to die off anyway and no longer contribute to yield. This point of view is partially valid: indeed, lower leaves after vegetation resumes have almost no effect on variety productivity. However, such infected leaves will affect the phytopathological condition of the field right up to harvest. Even light precipitation, frequent fogs, or dew will promote the build-up of infection, as it remains viable even on dead leaves. At the same time, the absence of disease on the lower leaf tier of wheat makes it possible to save on the number of fungicide applications or on the application rate, since infection pressure will be low.

According to Ukrainian scientists, the primary infection of winter wheat can develop at temperatures as low as +4…6 °C. That is, once the stable average daily temperature exceeds +5 °C (this year forecast for late March to early April), infection begins to spread across plants and throughout the crop alongside the resumption of vegetation. Without proper fungicide protection, pathogens will gradually move upward — to the flag leaf and even the ear. Multiple diseases can develop on a single leaf (mixed infection). Therefore, early spring protection plays a decisive role in the further growth and yield formation of winter cereals — and experienced agroproducers understand this well.

The issue lies elsewhere: most products require temperatures of at least +10 °C to work effectively.

There is a solution! alfa smart agro offers 2 effective options — 2 three-component fungicides for T1: Corvizar M, EC (fenpropidin 300 g/l + tebuconazole 150 g/l + myclobutanil 100 g/l) and Barrett, EC (prochloraz 340 g/l + tebuconazole 160 g/l + propiconazole 100 g/l).

Corvizar M is a fenpropidin-based fungicide with preventive, curative, and eradicant action for fast and long-lasting protection of wheat against a wide spectrum of diseases, including the most dangerous ones — powdery mildew, brown rust, septoria, helminthosporiosis, and other leaf spots. Thanks to fenpropidin and the highly soluble myclobutanil, Corvizar M demonstrates high fungicidal activity at temperatures as low as +5…7 °C, while tebuconazole provides prolonged curative action for up to three weeks. As a result, leaves stay green longer, remain free of infection, and photosynthesis continues actively.

Today, Corvizar M remains one of only two multi-component fenpropidin-based fungicides for cereal protection on the market — the benchmark product for T1.

Barrett is a prochloraz-based fungicide. Its disinfecting action is particularly pronounced on soil surfaces and plant debris, significantly reducing the overwintering infection reservoir in fields. After penetrating plant tissue, it first gradually accumulates in the mesophyll, then transitions to translaminar and systemic distribution. This makes prochloraz a fungicide with prolonged protective action against leaf spot pathogens. A portion of the active ingredient remains on the treated surface even at low temperatures and challenging weather conditions, providing long-term protection against pathogens.

Propiconazole and tebuconazole, as triazoles, are characterised by systemic distribution, rapid redistribution, and protection of new growth against leaf spots of various aetiology, powdery mildew, and rust.

The registered application rate of Barrett for wheat and barley is 0.6–1.2 l/ha. Even the medium rate of 1.0 l/ha contains 340 g of prochloraz and 260 g/ha of triazoles — fully sufficient for reliable control of early spring infection at a moderate level of spread. At the initial stages of disease development, the recommended rate is 0.6–0.8 l/ha. The maximum rate of 1.2 l/ha is recommended for heavily affected fields (complex of leaf spots, powdery mildew, rust) at the flag leaf emergence stage, when plant mass is already substantial and nearly fully formed.

Which product is better for the first wheat treatment — Corvizar M or Barrett? Despite their shared purpose, these T1 products have important differences that determine their use:

  1. when powdery mildew dominates on wheat and temperatures remain low at +5…7 °C, Corvizar M is recommended;
  2. but if the primary diseases on wheat are leaf spots — in particular septoria, cercosporellosis, and snow mould — then Barrett is the better choice.

Thus, the early spring fungicides Corvizar M and Barrett address the key crop health challenges following vegetation resumption:

control of a wide spectrum of diseases (mixed infection): septoria, helminthosporiosis, fusarium, powdery mildew, cercosporellosis, snow mould; high efficacy at low temperatures; fast curative action and prolonged protection against new infection.
