An important stage for good onion storage is drying. This should be done in a dry, well-ventilated place, such as an attic, greenhouse, or under a canopy. It is necessary to dry for 10-14 days until the neck becomes thin and completely dry. Otherwise, the onions will start to rot during storage.

After drying, it is necessary to trim the stems, leaving a neck of 3-5 cm. It is also important to select healthy and intact bulbs. Damaged ones should be stored separately to be used first.

Optimal storage conditions:

Temperature: +1…+5°C (in a cellar or basement) or +18…+22°C (at home, but without temperature fluctuations).

Humidity: low (60–70%), as excessive humidity can cause rotting.

Containers: mesh bags, woven baskets, crates with holes, nylon stockings.

Do not store onions in airtight bags or plastic containers without ventilation. Vegetables need to “breathe.” Therefore, it is better to store onions in several crates rather than in a thick layer.

Do not store onions near:

Potatoes – they release moisture, causing onions to spoil.

Apples – they release ethylene, which accelerates sprouting.
