How to Choose Tines, Legs, and Discs: Tips for Owners of TopDown, Opus Cultivators

Väderstad offers a wide range of equipment not only for soil cultivation and sowing, but also provides a large assortment of working tools, allowing to adapt the equipment to the unique characteristics of the soil on each farm. To ensure the perfect result, the company has developed a unique configurator.

This tool helps to accurately select working tools, taking into account the task at hand (whether it’s cutting, mixing, loosening, or leveling), soil type (light, medium, or heavy), and the required depth of cultivation. For example, for tine units, cultivation is available from zero to forty centimeters, and for disc tools – up to sixteen centimeters.

“We have practical recommendations on the need to replace working tools depending on the degree of wear. For example, the minimum recommended sizes of discs for TopDown multi-purpose cultivators are: 380 mm for System Disc with a diameter of 450 mm and 400 mm for System Disc with a diameter of 470 mm. Similar recommendations apply to tines.

However, the quality of work of TopDown, Opus cultivators depends not only on the degree of wear of the working tools but also on the pressure of the cultivator legs, which can be adjusted by changing the working pressure of the hydraulic system.

For soft soils, lower pressure is applied. This allows reducing the effort on the legs and tines in case of collision with obstacles. For hard and dense soils, higher pressure is applied.

It is important that the cultivator leg stays back not due to soil resistance but only in case of collision with obstacles. Otherwise, the connection and sealing of hydraulic cylinders may wear out more intensively.

As a rule, the pressure in the hydraulic system for protecting the tine working tools should be within the range of 110 to 150 bar, which equals the operating force at the level of 400-700 kg per leg,” the company notes.

To order and select the necessary spare parts, receive comprehensive information on care, settings, and maintenance of units, you can contact representatives and dealers of the company in your region or use specialized operation manuals available on the company’s website.
