Frost Destroys 125 Hectares of Winter Barley for Farmer from Kherson Region

In the “Agrofirma-Dodola” from the Kherson region, spring frosts did not significantly affect rapeseed, but winter barley perished. This was reported by the head of the enterprise Vasyl Shtender in a special project on Latifundist.com.

Yes, due to the spring frosts, 125 hectares of winter barley perished, and 400 hectares of peas were frostbitten, with 300 hectares being severely affected. The temperature dropped to -4…-5°C.

“Last year there were frosts as well, but they did not have such an effect. This year the situation is much worse,” the farmer said.

According to Vasyl Shtender, the most affected were underdeveloped barley crops that were hit by frosts back in February. The affected field in the agrofirm was treated with broad-spectrum herbicides – the enterprise operates according to the no-till technology – and now they are waiting for rain. It is likely that they will replant it with sunflowers (corn was the predecessor here).

“Frosts ‘nipped’ the tops of barley at our neighbors, peas suffered much more. Meanwhile, flax and sunflowers survived. Corn had just started to sprout, so no critical consequences have been recorded yet,” added the agronomist.
